“Eyes on the Eternal”
By Dianne Prince
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. … So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” — 2 Corinthians 4:16, 18 (NIV)
When we look at the political climate, it seems as though everything is falling apart. We see economic inequities, social injustice that keeps repeating, and rising prices that no one seems able to control. We watch loved ones battle sickness, bills piling higher, and young people making reckless choices—and it feels as though things are only getting worse.
But we cannot give up because of what we see around us. We cannot lose heart because of what’s happening on the outside.
We cannot submit to what we see with our eyes, because what we see will discourage us. We cannot concede to what we feel in our flesh, because our feelings will deceive us. And we cannot surrender to what we think in our minds, because our thoughts can lead us to lose hope.
Remember—things are not always what they seem. What we see with the natural eye is only temporary. Temporary things are here today and gone tomorrow. Some linger longer than we’d like, but they will not last forever. When we make up our minds to stay the course and trust God through it all, even the most stubborn seasons will eventually pass.
Here’s the truth to hold onto: What you see today is not the end. This is not as good as it gets. Don’t be distracted by the “here and now.” Fix your focus on the eternal—on the things you cannot see. If you can see it, it’s temporary. If you can feel it, it will fade.
Jesus reminds us, “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” Why? Because good times are coming. A better day is on the way. God has already prepared a future just for you.
So lift your eyes beyond what’s visible. Your present situation is not your final destination. The best is yet to come!
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. … For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
