“Second Chances”

By Dianne Prince

“Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing…”— Isaiah 43:18–19 (NKJV)

A new year often arrives carrying the weight of the old one—regrets, missed opportunities, and words we wish we could take back. Yet Scripture reminds us that God is not limited by our past. He is the God of new beginnings, second chances, and grace without expiration.

I am reminded of Peter. He loved Jesus deeply, yet he denied Him three times at His darkest hour. If anyone had reason to believe that failure had disqualified him, it was Peter. But after the resurrection, Jesus did not replace him. He restored him. On the shore of Galilee, Jesus asked Peter three times, “Do you love Me?” With each answer, Peter was recommissioned. His story did not end in denial. It began again in grace. God was not finished.

That same God meets us at the start of this year. Isaiah reminds us that God does not merely recycle old plans. He does new things. He makes roads in wilderness places and rivers in dry seasons. He releases new mercies where we expected only consequences.

As you step into this year, write down one area where you believe you have failed too much to try again. Then intentionally invite God into it through prayer, a small step of obedience, or by seeking wise counsel. Do not wait to feel worthy. Peter did not.

God specializes in fresh starts, especially for imperfect people like me and you.

A new year is not just a change of calendar—it is a reminder that God still gives us fresh starts.
