“Jesus!”

By Dianne Prince

In fear and amazement the disciples asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him” (Luke 8:25b).

In our scripture this morning, the disciples were crossing over to the other side of the lake. Jesus was asleep. The disciples were sailing just fine on calm waters. And all of a sudden, an unexpected storm came out of nowhere. The disciples were trying to handle it on their own.  When they got to the point where the storm got the best of them, out of desperation, they called Jesus. Jesus immediately heard them and rescued them.

Like the disciples, in our lives, we can be going about our daily business and all of a sudden an unexpected situation pops up out of nowhere. And like the disciples, our first response many times, is to try to get it under control on our own. And we call Jesus when everything else has failed. The one thing we need to remember is that Jesus always has His eyes on us. And His ears are always listening for our cry. He sees when life throws us a curve ball. He realizes when we are fearful. He knows when we need Him to step in. And he is always listening for our prayers.

In the chaos of daily life, in the midst of anxieties and fears, and in the weakness of our faith, if we just remember to say the name, JESUS, he will hear us, and He will come to us right where we are.

We sometimes forget that we always have the most powerful presence in the universe at our disposal. Yes, He is invisible. But He is active. And He is always with us.

Today, if you are overwhelmed to the point that you have run out of options and you do not know what to pray for, just call out His name – JESUS. He is standing by, listening for your cry. Jesus will come to your aid. And He will come in full power and authority over your situation. After all, “He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”
