“A Thank You God Does Not Expect”
By Dianne Prince
“What can I offer the LORD for all He has done for me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and praise the LORD’s name for saving me. I will keep my promises to the LORD in the presence of all His people.” (Psalm 116:12–14, NIV)
How can we say thank you to a God who owns everything? What can we give back to the One who blesses us so generously? The answer is simple: one way to thank God is to praise Him when He least expects it.
Just as God surprises us with unexpected blessings, an unplanned “Thank You, Lord” in the middle of a busy day pleases Him. A heartfelt “Hallelujah” in a difficult moment makes Him smile. A silent “Thank You, Father” during a tense conversation shows that we trust Him in both good and challenging times. It tells God that we rely on Him to order our words, control our tongues, guide our steps, and work all things together for our good.
The psalmist offers three ways we can show gratitude to God today.
First, thank Him by being a positive witness before others. People notice how we act, what we say, and how we respond.
Second, thank Him by helping someone even when we do not feel like it. Our kindness uplifts others and brings us joy in return.
Finally, thank Him by choosing praise over complaint in times of adversity.
Today, make a deliberate effort to live thankfully—be a light, lend a hand, and let praise rise where grumbling might have been.
A thankful heart turns ordinary moments into sacred offerings of love.
