“Jesus Changes Everything”

Our lesson today is taken from John 2:1-11. We will focus on verses 7, 9 and 10.
7 Jesus said to them [the servants}, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim. 9 When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine… the headwaiter called the bridegroom, 10 and said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.”
In our scripture today, Jesus performs His first of 35 recorded miracles. You know the story. There is a wedding. The host ran out of wine. There are 6 waterpots that are typically used for Jewish purification rites before and after meals (dirty and despicable). Jesus orders the servants to fill the waterpots with water. He then turns the water into wine of superior quality.
This miracle is rich with practical lessons for us. First of all, Jesus expects us to celebrate and socialize with those around us. We cannot be so strait-laced, that we shun family gatherings, co-worker celebrations, and significant events that are important to those around us. When in doubt, pray for spiritual discernment. We are to be in the world, but not of the world.
Secondly, we can minister in the midst of a social event. God has a way of orchestrating a need in the midst of a party to give us an opportunity to glorify Him. He will present circumstances that allow us to step-up and help in a god-directed way. When the opportunity presents itself, step up to the plate.
Finally, the most profound lesson from this scripture is an illustration of the transforming power of Jesus. He will take nothing and turn it into something valuable. He will take a void soul and turn it into a vibrant living being. Jesus will take a desolate life and turn it into a life full or energy and filled with productivity. He will revive a depressed spirit and He will resurrect whatever we need Him to breathe life into at any point in time.
Remember today, God’s power knows no limits. Jesus changes everything, He is the great transformer. Trust Him to change your dead situation. Go about your day believing that He will give it new life.
