“Never Alone”
By Dianne Prince
“And they [the disciples] said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us” (Luke 24:32, NKJV).
In our scripture today, Jesus has gotten up from the grave and He is on his way to meet His disciples. On His way, He saw two disciples walking on the road to Emmaus. Their hearts were heavy with confusion and grief. Jesus joined them, but they did not recognize Him. He walked with them, talked with them, and taught them from the scriptures. And still, they did not see that it was Jesus. It was not until He broke bread with them that their eyes were opened.
Sometimes, Jesus walks right beside us in seasons of doubt or disappointment, and we do not realize it because our eyes are fixed on our pain. We often pray for a clear sign, a dramatic rescue, or a miracle that will wipe away the problem entirely. And yet, more often than not, Jesus comes quietly. Not with fanfare, but in ways so gentle and subtle that we can miss Him entirely if we are not paying attention.
Jesus often comes to us through the comfort of a friend who calls unexpectedly or in a Bible verse we have read a hundred times, but now it speaks with new life. He often comes in a moment of unexplainable peace right in the middle of our chaos or through a door opening we did not know He was preparing.
He reveals Himself in the ordinary. In the stillness. In the quiet presence that reminds us that we are not alone.
The question for you to reflect on this morning is, are you so focused on your crisis that you might be missing the quiet ways Jesus is revealing Himself to you? Today, expect Him to show up in the routine experiences and the familiar things. Take a breath. Listen closely. He may not be changing your situation just yet, but He is showing up in the middle of it.
