The Anchor of Hope
By Dianne Prince
“Now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13, NKJV)
Faith and hope are closely connected, yet they are not the same. Faith is what allows us to trust God in the present moment—believing His Word is true even when our circumstances do not line up yet. Hope, however, looks ahead. It is the confident expectation that what God has promised will one day come to pass. For example, faith believes that God hears your prayer for healing, but hope is what keeps you looking forward to the day He brings that healing, whether here on earth or in eternity. Faith says, “God can.” Hope says, “God will, in His time.” Faith lays the foundation, but hope keeps us walking forward when the wait feels long.
Hope is a sustaining force for us as believers. It keeps our hearts anchored when circumstances seem uncertain, discouragement threatens to set in, or our prayers are delayed. True hope is rooted in God’s promises and His unchanging character. It does not waver with every challenge or setback.
When life tests our patience and circumstances test our faith, hope reminds us that God does not move on our timetable. Even while we are waiting, His plans are unfolding. Our hope fuels endurance, perseverance, and trust, allowing us to stand firm no matter the storms around us.
Hope is not just for us. It is a light to others. When people see our unwavering hope, it inspires them to trust in God’s faithfulness. Through our testimony, acts of kindness, and steadfastness, we become a living reminder that God is always faithful and never fails.
When you feel yourself giving in to hopelessness, ask God to strengthen your hope and help you to endure patiently. Hope will not disappoint you, because it is anchored in the One who never fails.
