“The Voice in the Wilderness”

By Dianne Prince

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.’” — Isaiah 40:3 (NKJV)

As the birth of Jesus draws nearer, we meet a prophetic voice calling out from the wilderness—John the Baptist. Long before Jesus began His earthly ministry, John was sent to ready the hearts of the people, urging them to turn from distractions and return to God. His message was simple, yet profound: Prepare the way of the Lord.

The wilderness symbolizes more than a location. It mirrors the dry, cluttered, and overlooked places within our minds and hearts. During the busy days of December, it is easy for our inner lives to become crowded with noise, concerns, and responsibilities. But God still sends a call into those quiet, barren places. He is gently saying, “Make room for Me.”

Preparation for Christ’s coming is not merely outward—singing carols, decorating homes, or wrapping gifts. It is inward. It is choosing repentance over resentment, stillness over hurry, and surrender over struggling. It is opening our hearts for the King who comes gently, yet powerfully.

Today’s scripture reminds us that preparing the way means clearing a path—removing what hinders us, straightening what has become crooked in our lives, and softening what has grown hardened in our hearts.

As you approach this day, pause and listen. What is God calling you to lay down? What is He leading you to pick up? The Savior is near, and He comes with grace, truth, and transforming power.

Lift your head. Prepare room for Jesus. He is ready to meet you in the midst of your wilderness.
