“Believe It”
By Dianne Prince
“Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said to him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ So he said to them, ‘Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe’” (John 20:24–25, NKJV).
Thomas was not there the first time Jesus appeared to the disciples after His resurrection. When they told him, “We have seen the Lord,” he did not believe it. “Unless I see… unless I touch…” he said. Thomas was not being difficult. He was being honest.
A week later, Jesus returned, just for Thomas. Jesus did not come to judge or shame Thomas for doubting. He came to meet him right where he was. “Put your finger here,” Jesus said. “Stop doubting and believe.” And with that, Thomas responded in reverence: “My Lord and my God!”
Jesus still meets us in our doubt. We may question if God really hears our prayers when the healing has not come. We may wonder if Jesus is with us when our finances are stretched thin, or when our relationship is falling apart. Like Thomas, we often want to see and touch before we believe.
Jesus does not dismiss us in our uncertainty and our fears. He draws closer to us. And He walks with us through our questions and leads us into a deeper trust in Him.
If there are places in your heart where belief feels hard and you are quietly saying, “Unless I see, I will not believe,” be honest with Jesus. Bring your doubts to Him. Ask Him to meet you in your unbelief.
And know this: He will meet you right where you are. Why? Because He still comes for the one. He still shows up in the silence.
He still says, “Stop doubting and believe.”
