“Silent Giving”
By Dianne Prince
“Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins. Jesus called his disciples to him and said, ‘I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on’” (Mark 12:42–44, NLT).
Jesus sat near the temple treasury, watching as people gave their offerings. Many wealthy individuals contributed large sums. But one poor widow stood out—she gave two small coins, everything she had. And Jesus declared her gift greater than all the rest.
Why? Because she did not give from her surplus. She gave from her lack. Her offering was not about the amount. It was about her heart. It was a quiet act of trust, a declaration that God was her provider and the source of everything she had.
This passage reminds us that worship is not measured by outward appearance, but by motive. The most powerful offerings are often unseen—when there is no audience, no applause, and it costs us something. But Jesus sees it all. And He commands us to live with open hands and trusting hearts.
Today, strive to follow the model of the widow. Give, not just your money, but your time, love, and service. Give silently. Give courageously. And give with a heart full of trust. What you offer in faith may seem small to the world, but in God’s eyes, it is immeasurably great.
God sees your heart—your quiet trust is powerful and your courage makes Him smile.
