“Choose Your Battles”

By Dianne Prince

Scripture teaches that wisdom is not only knowing what to do, but also knowing when to act and when to step back. Proverbs 4:7 says, “Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.” Godly wisdom helps us discern which battles require our voice and which ones require our restraint.

Not every disagreement deserves engagement. Proverbs 20:3 reminds us, “It is honorable for a man to stop striving, since any fool can start a quarrel.” There is strength in peace and maturity in silence when the Spirit leads you that way. Wisdom weighs the cost, the timing, and the heart behind your response.

James 1:5 offers a promise filled with comfort: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach.” When emotions rise or conflict appears, pause and pray. Ask the Lord if this moment calls for the truth to be spoken, or patience to be practiced, or for surrender to be embraced.

What does wisdom look like? It looks like choosing not to respond immediately to a harsh word, or deciding to pray instead of argue. It means addressing an issue calmly rather than publicly, or releasing control when pride demands a reaction. Ecclesiastes 3:7 reminds us there is “a time to keep silence, and a time to speak.”

As you walk with God, He will teach you to fight the right battles with grace, courage, and peace. His wisdom will guard your heart and guide your steps.

When you choose your battles wisely, you realize the goal is not to win every argument—but to protect your peace, honor God, and invest your strength where it truly matters.
