“Chosen to Spread the Word”

By Dianne Prince

“The shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.’  So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.  When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.” (Luke 2:15-17)

It is remarkable that God chose shepherds to carry the good news of His Son’s birth. By their very occupation, shepherds were considered ceremonially unclean and excluded from religious gatherings. They led nomadic lives, constantly moving in search of grass and water for their flocks.

Despite their status as outcasts, the shepherds accepted the angel’s message about Christ with joy. They not only rejoiced but also spread the word about what they had seen and heard (Luke 2:15-18).

Today’s scripture teaches us that God often chooses the lowly and unlikely to share His message. Like the shepherds, we too are called to spread the Word of what we have received and witnessed.

What message do we carry? It is the good news that Jesus came for the lowly, the isolated, the despised, and the outcasts. He seeks those who do not always get it right—people like you and me. He reaches out to the overlooked, the excluded, and the invisible.

Following Jesus’ example, let’s seek out those who are hurting, hopeless, or in need of encouragement. Let us share how Jesus has transformed our lives. Let us tell others about His unexpected goodness, constant guidance, amazing power, and unconditional love.

Today, make a deliberate effort to share this message with the unsaved, encouraging them to believe. Share it with those who are saved but have lost their way, helping to renew their faith, strengthen their hearts, and draw them back to God’s presence.

“When they [the shepherds] had seen him [Jesus], they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.”
