Listen for the Whisper

By Dianne Prince

[The Word of the Lord came to Elijah and said] “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire came a still small voice.— 1 Kings 19:11–12 (NKJV)

Many voices compete for your attention every day. When decisions press in and confusion clouds your mind—pause. Wait on God. If several good options lie before you and the right path is unclear, be still. When your thoughts are scattered and solutions seem disjointed, resist the urge to rush forward. If there is no peace, God has not yet given clearance to move.

God is not the author of confusion. His voice is clear, steady, and sure. He speaks through His Word, by His Spirit, and sometimes confirms His answer through others.

Elijah needed a word from the Lord, and when he quieted himself before God, the answer came—not in the wind, not in the earthquake, not in the fire, but in a still small voice. God’s direction does not thunder. It comes gently, unmistakably, to the heart that listens.

So, as you pray for guidance, expect His voice. Follow it with confidence. When you reach a crossroad, stop and seek the Spirit’s leading. If you do not hear Him, stay still. But when He speaks, obey—even if His direction defies human logic. Why? Because God is with you. He goes before you to light the path, behind you to nudge you forward, beneath you to steady your steps, and all around you to cover you in His care.

Today, if you long for an answer but hear only silence, do not move until God speaks. Pray for patience. Quiet the noise. Trust Him to make the way clear. His answer will come—not in chaos, but in the calm of His whisper.
