“Order My Steps”

By Pastor Charles E. Williams, Jr.

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: And he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: For the Lord upholdeth him with his hand.  I have been young, and now am old; Yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his seed begging bread. He is ever merciful, and lendeth; And his seed is blessed” (Psalm 37:23-26).

As we journey through life, it is important that we our steps are ordered by the Lord. We know that the devil comes but to kill, steal, and to destroy; therefore, it is important now more than every before that we look to the Lord for our daily direction in life. Thankfully, in Psalm 37 David gives us a reminder and encouragement for us to have our steps ordered by God.

First, David encourages us to make sure that we are controlled by God. He says that “the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.” In essence we are the puppets and God is our puppet master. We must willingly allow Him to pull the strings in our lives and move us in the direction that he desires for us. The puppet does not give directions to the puppet master, but the puppet submits to the will and the way of the one who is in control. Secondly, we are reminded that we are covered by God. The text says, “Though [we] fall, [we] shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholdeth [us] with his hand.” We are not perfect, but even in our imperfections we serve a perfect God, and He is one that will uphold us with His righteous hands. Finally, this text gives us hope and remind us that we will be cared for by God. David says, “I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.” In essence we must remember that we serve a faithful God who has never and will never forsake us. God will take care of each and everyone of us every day and in every way! We must make sure that our steps are ordered by the Lord and when we do so we can comfortably rest in the goodness and the grace of our God.
