When the Brook Dries Up
By Dianne Prince
“Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land.” — 1 Kings 17:7 (NIV)
Elijah had been living in a season of divine provision. God directed him to a brook, where he could drink fresh water, and commanded the ravens to bring him bread and meat every morning and evening. Everything was flowing smoothly. It must have felt like this arrangement could last forever. But then, the brook dried up.
God does not always tell us why certain provisions end. It may feel sudden, unfair, or frightening. Yet when God closes off one source, it is often His way of signaling, “It is time to move on. I have something new for you, something greater.”
When the brook dries up, it is not a sign that God has abandoned you. It is a sign that He is leading you forward. Perhaps you were becoming comfortable. Perhaps your growth was slowing. By allowing one season to end, God makes room for a new season of faith, impact, and provision.
Instead of despairing when a brook dries up in your life—whether it is a job, a relationship, or an opportunity—see it as God’s invitation to trust Him again. Look up, lean in, and prepare for His next instruction. The God who sent ravens to feed Elijah already has your next place of provision waiting.
If your brook has dried up, do not build a monument to the past. Lift your eyes and listen for God’s direction. His provision has not stopped—it is simply waiting for you in a new place.
