“Sudden Storms”

By Dianne Prince

“Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace, be still!’ And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.” — Mark 4:39 (NKJV)

Life has a way of shifting without warning. One moment is peaceful, predictable, and steady—the next, you are caught in a storm you did not see coming. Sudden illness, broken trust, unexpected news—such storms have a way of rattling even the strongest faith.

The disciples experienced this firsthand. They were crossing the sea with Jesus, likely enjoying the quiet of the journey. But then, without notice, a violent windstorm arose. Waves crashed into the boat. Panic replaced peace. Despite the chaos, Jesus was asleep. When the disciples finally cried out, He rose and simply said, “Peace, be still.” And just like that, the storm was over.

This moment reminds us that Jesus is always aware and close, even when it seems like He is silent. He remains in control, even when everything else spins out of it. He allows the storm but never abandons the boat.

So when life’s calm is interrupted, remember Who is with you. Cry out to Him, not in despair, but in trust. He may not always calm the storm immediately, but He will always calm you. Your peace is not found in the absence of storms but in the presence of the Savior. And He is always near.
